Since 2018, the Salaam School Initiative has benefited over 400 children in Mora, Far North Cameroon. We have achieved encouraging outcomes among participating children: 70% can now read and write, 100% report rejecting violence, revenge and terrorism, and 60% have identified talents and interests through recreational and personal-development activities. Despite this, we have one major challenge: the initiative has operated without a dedicated classroom or prayer ground. This Christmas, we have an opportunity to change that story together!

For eight years, Local Youth Corner Cameroon (LOYOC), through its Salaam School Initiative, has remained committed to supporting children in armed conflict situations. In the Boko Haram-hit Far North region of Cameroon, this community-led initiative is providing free learning opportunities, safe spaces for learning and worship, psychosocial and well-being support, food and basic assistance, alongside livelihood skills for parents and pathways for children to return to formal education. Despite limited infrastructure, the initiative has continued to inspire hope and create opportunities for children in crisis-affected communities.

Imagine what more we could achieve if these children finally had a dedicated space to learn, pray, interact and dream! We shall work together with the community to build a befitting space for them from the foundation to the roof.

Thanks to donations received through the World Bank Community Connections Campaign, LOYOC is taking an important step towards making this dream a reality. We are mobilising volunteers, partners and more resources to construct an innovative, climate-friendly classroom and prayer ground using recycled plastic waste.

This project is more than putting up walls. It is about transforming waste into opportunities, strengthening climate resilience and creating a lasting foundation for the next generation. The new infrastructure will help expand the reach, quality and sustainability of an initiative that has already touched over 400 young lives.

So far, our team on the ground alongside local volunteers is collecting plastic waste and bottles in preparation for this lifetime experience.

Be Part of This Christmas Gift!

For eight years, we have built hope without a classroom. This Christmas, let’s build the classroom that will carry that hope even further!
